Herbal supplements are a type of dietary supplement that contain herbs, either singly or in mixtures. An herb (also called a botanical) is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, and/or therapeutic properties. Herbal supplements can act in the same way as drugs. Therefore, they can cause medical problems if not used correctly or if taken in large amounts. In some cases, people have experienced negative effects even though they followed the instructions on a supplement label. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which oversees the safety of food and drugs sold in the United States, considers herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements all to be dietary supplements. Herbal medicines are derived from natural sources. Many prescription and over-the-counter medications are, too. Each of these should be treated with caution. If you do choose herbal supplements, be sure to talk to your doctor first. Hoodia arrived in the US roughly 3 years ago. Its novelty and promise of dieting “cures” created a sensational wave that eventually caught the attention of CBS 60 Minutes News which subsequently purchased it and featured it along with a full-blown story on the hoodia cactus plant from which it is made. Hoodia diet pill kills the appetite and attacks obesity, is organic with no synthetic or artificial appetite control agents, has no known side effects, contains a miracle molecule (up to 100,000 times more powerful than glucose) that fools the brain into believing you are full, and even stops you from thinking about food. Chinese herbs and other herbal supplements known to build and strengthen the body have been used for thousands of years to help people feel better, more vital and live longer. Many of them have also been used for treating various illness and restoring the normal body functions for hundreds of years, and have proved their effectiveness. One of the most appealing qualities of Chinese herbs therapy is the low risk of adverse reaction or side effects, especially when compared to pharmaceutical drugs. Herbal supplements have enjoyed a surge of popularity during recent years in the United States, they have been very popular in Europe, particularly in Germany, for decades. The practice of using herbs dates back thousands of years. For the better part of the 19th century, medicines dispensed by most American pharmacies were derived from plants and other natural substances including some, such as St.John's Wort and echinacea, that are becoming popular again in the late 20th century. Today in America, conventional drug manufacturers are adding herbal ingredients to their herbal supplements products to satisfy consumer demand. It's easy to find laxatives with senne, and multivitamin tablets with ginseng and gingko biloba.
